You will have to begin writing your blog post with a bang. That is if you truly desire to remain a successful blogger or freelance writer.
Because this is the only way to guarantee the success of your online article. And that success begins only when your readers find the motivation to stay long enough on the page.
In this post, therefore, I want to show you just 6 of the most compelling ways you can start writing your next blog post.
Yes, it is easy for anybody to write an introduction to a blog post. But the truth is that not every introduction to a blog post is going to make a blog post succeed.
Whether you are a blogger or a freelance writer, it is a must that your opening sentences force your readers to stand still. Those first few lines should not make your audience bounce off the page like a tennis ball.
If you’re ready to learn how to begin writing a blog post that rocks, then keep reading.
1. Start with an imperative sentence.
This is a very powerful way to introduce a blog post whose objective is to entice the reader to act in your preferred way.
We call it persuasive writing, right?
So a post of this nature can start with an opening sentence that challenges the reader to act.
If you consider the opening sentence of this particular post you are reading, you can see how compelling it is. The reader cannot help but begin thinking of how to take that action in order to achieve the desired result.
So next time you want to write an online article that seeks to prompt your readers to act in a certain way, you can try this approach.
Begin your blog post with a brief but action-oriented sentence.
2. State your purpose for writing the post
Here is an example.
- In this post, I want to show you five points to consider when you are about to write your introduction to a blog post.
One beautiful thing about this approach is that it saves your reader’s precious time. Those who have no immediate need for what is contained in the body of the blog post will quickly move away.
They will be grateful for it and even try finding other posts in your blog’s archives that might interest them.
And you can rest assured that a good number of regular visitors to your site will come to love this about your posts so much that they will keep coming back.
3. Ask a rhetorical question.
A good opening question will whet the reading appetite of your audience.
They will be eager to know how you will eventually address such a question.
That certainly is your bait to hook them for possibly the entire length of the post. So where this is appropriate, do not hesitate to use it.
I have a couple of examples for you.
- What if you had the skills needed to write an awesome introduction to your next blog post?
Did you know before this moment that you could easily earn 10k dollars every month just by writing online articles? Are you prepared to find out how?
4. Begin the blog post with an interesting anecdote.
Every good writer is a good story teller. And my guess is that includes you.
But you can only unleash this hidden talent of yours when you make the attempt.
Every time you are writing a blog post is an opportunity for you to come up with a story in the opening sentences.
Thankfully, we all love to sit and hear a good story. That is why you can reduce your website’s bounce rate significantly. Simply entertain your readers with a smart and relevant story at the beginning of your blog article.
All you need to get the right anecdote to begin your blog post is a bit of imagination and creativity. And make sure it is appropriate to the subject matter of the post.
For example, assuming you want to write a blog post about how to save money, you could as well begin with a story about how your toddler child taught you the importance of saving coins.
Then tell your reader you wish to share with them 3, 4, 6 etc amazing lessons you learnt from the incident.
5. Say how excited you are today.
Remember that people these days don’t have time for boredom. And for many surfers of the internet, the act of reading itself is boring and time-wasting enough.
This is why more and more people are turning to videos and podcasts to get the information they want.
Clearly, you and I wouldn’t dare bore our readers with stale opening paragraphs.
We must only strive to encourage the readers we’re lucky to have by opening our posts with contagious excitement.
So tell them how super-energized you are to be doing what you’re doing. Show them that if they keep reading, they will also begin to get that same awesome feeling.
This is the way to have their eyes and minds glued to that screen for a much longer period of time.
Take a look at this example.
Let me begin this post about the benefits of positive thinking by telling you how super-excited I am to be writing about this topic today.
You know why? Well, I’m going to let you in on one of the most underrated keys to personal growth and happiness.
Personally, I have of late been reaping the amazing benefits of positive thinking. So I know what I’m talking about.
Are you ready to hear me out so you too can begin to enjoy the fruits of maintaining a positive attitude? Let’s go!
6. Tell them what they stand to gain.
What is in it for me?
That is an intrinsic human mindset triggered in any situation at any time.
So yes, your title for that blog post may be a Google-buster. But will that be enough to make your reader (who is not a bot or crawler or whatever) to keep reading through the remaining lines to the end? Maybe not.
Now you can see the reason why you need to appeal to the basic human cravings of your readers in order to win them over.
How? By simply informing them that they stand to benefit this way or that way if they keep reading and also apply what you are going to teach them.
Consider this example. Mind you, this is your opening sentence right under the title.
I can assure you that you stand to gain a whole lot from this post. You will benefit in terms of your health, your career and your relationships if only you follow the instructions I’m about to give you in the below tutorial.
Remember that apart from the title of your blog post, the way and manner in which you craft your opening sentence(s) or paragraph will play a major role in determining its success or failure.
So if you haven’t been giving this aspect of online article writing any significant attention, I urge you to begin to do so from today. And don’t forget to incorporate some of the suggestions above into the beginning of your blog posts.
